UNK Sweeps Nationally-Ranked MSSU

Kearney, Neb. – Junior lefties Josh Cooper and Evan Hill picked up two more wins and the Nebraska-Kearney baseball team had a couple of big innings at the plate to take a double header from Missouri Southern State, 8-2 and 7-4, Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.

These were the first two games of a weekend series pushed back a day due to weather. The two teams will complete the series with a nine inning affair Sunday starting at noon.

UNK (12-10, 5-3) has now won six in a row while the Lions (17-7, 5-3) see a four-game win streak come to an end. They are ranked 11th and 19th, respectively, in the two NCAA Division II national polls.

In game one, Cooper (Roseville, Calif.) moved to 3-0 by fanning six in four innings of scoreless relief. Walking two and allowing just three singles, he replaced senior right hander Mitchell Robinson (Golden, Colo.) who allowed one earned run in five full innings or work. He now ranks second all-time at UNK in career innings with 248.3. Jared Loschen ('10) holds the record at 286.0 innings.

Both teams manufactured two runs a piece with the Lopers scoring their two in the first and MSSU tallying two in the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, UNK scored three times thanks to three singles, two walks and one Lion error.

The Lopers then tacked on three more in the seventh as sophomore second baseman Calvin Rudolph (2 for 3, one run & two RBI's) had a run scoring single with freshman catcher Will Olson (2 for 4, one run & three RBI's) directly following with a two-run homer to right. Rudolph (Millard South) and Olson (Millard West) were seventh and eighth, respectively, in the lineup.

Also at the plate, junior left fielder Brandon Hernandez (San Diego, Calif.) went 3 for 5 and a run scored with junior right fielder Pate Katechis (Longmont, Colo.) 2 for 4 with a run from the six-hole.

Committing five errors that led to two Loper runs, MSSU was led by cleanup hitter Cory Canterbury (2 for 5, two RBI's). The Lions did strand 11 runners on base.

In the night cap, UNK erased a 2-0 deficit by scoring four in its half of the third. A one-out error opened the flood gates as the Loper followed with two doubles and a single. Two innings later, junior first baseman Alex Achtermann (2 for 4, four RBI's) added some insurance with a three-run dinger to left. Going opposite field one again, that is the Colorado native's seventh dinger of the spring.

On the bump, Hill (Petaluma, Calif.) is now 3-1 after allowing two earned in 5.1 innings. He fanned two, walked one and gave way to seniors Thomas Ruwe (Arlington) and Bradley Brown (Aurora, Colo.). They combined for no earned runs and two K's in 2.1 innings. Finally, junior Eric Sandoz (Austin, Texas) worked a clean ninth to pick up his third save.

Canterbury (2 for 5, one run) was one of three Lions to have two hits in the loss.
