Game Recap: Softball |

4-0 Weekend

Kearney, Neb. – Senior Meg Housholder and sophomore Erin Hallman both threw well and sophomores Alexis Howe and Sara Sempek homered twice as Nebraska-Kearney easily took a double header from Lincoln University, 12-4 (5 innings) and 8-3, Saturday afternoon in Hays, Kan.

With the wins, the Lopers (8-17, 4-4 MIAA) went a perfect 4-0 on the weekend. Meanwhile, the Blue Tigers (3-19, 0-8) have dropped 12 in a row.

In game one, Housholder (Parker, Colo.) struck out four and allowed just one earned run over the first four innings. Now 5-3 on the year, she also went 1 for 2 at the plate with a run scored.

UNK led 3-1 before erupting for six runs in the bottom of the third. The big inning featured back-to-back homers by junior third baseman Cheyenne Hamilton (Frederick, Colo.) and Sempek (Papillion). Three batters later, freshman second baseman Kaylee Schutte (Elkhorn South) brought home two more with a double.

Out hitting LU by a 14-6 margin, UNK was led at the plate by leadoff hitter Kaela Samek (3 for 4, one run & two RBI's), Schutte (2 for 3, two runs) and Howe (2 for 4, one run & two RBI's). Howe hit a solo dinger in the first.

UNK gave Hallman (Lakewood, Colo.) all the support she needed in game two by tallying five in the first. Sempek (4 for 4) smacked a three-run dinger with Howe (2 for 4, two runs) having a two-run shot in the fourth. Hamilton (2 for 4, two runs & one RBI) also had a productive effort.

In the circle, Hallman now has three wins after a complete game nine-hitter. Fanning six and walking none, she blanked the Blue Tigers in three innings and allowed eight singles.

UNK heads to Wayne State (6-11) Wednesday afternoon for a non-conference double header. Central Missouri and Southwest Baptist then come to Dryden Park next weekend.
