Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Kearney Downs the Flying Fleet; Men Host D1 Air Force Monday

Kearney, Neb. – The nationally-ranked Nebraska-Kearney tennis teams defeated the Erskine (SC) College Flying Fleet by identical 8-1 scores Saturday morning in Hilton Head.

These duals were part of UNK's annual spring break trip. Earlier in the week, the Lopers swept D3 Carleton (MN) College with the women also beating NAIA Savannah College (GA) of Art and Design. With the wins in sunny Hilton Head, the 18th-ranked Loper men are now 12-2 with the 37th-ranked women 12-4.

The Flying Fleet women, who hail from Due West, S.C., fell to 4-10 after its loss to UNK. The Lopers allowed just one total point at number two and three doubles but EC's number one pair managed a 9-8 (4) victory over senior Amanda Alvarez (Spain) and freshman Zhanel Turarbek (Kazakhstan).

In singles, UNK won five of the six matches in straight sets. Ranked 16th in the Central Region, Alvarez did allow a point (6-0, 6-0) at number three with true freshman Claire Neil (Papillion) doing the same three spots lower in the lineup. Finally, true freshman Faith Kowalski (Kearney) rallied for a win at number five; 5-7, 6-1, 10-7.

The Kearney men kept the Flying Fleet winless (0-17) as they allowed just six combined points in doubles and 13 combined points in singles.

Ranked 12th in D2, senior Joey Richards (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and freshman Alberto Diaz (Spain) won 8-1 at number two doubles with Richards (6-0, 6-0) not allowing a point at number five singles and Diaz winning (6-1, 6-1) a spot lower in the order.

While Erskine won at number one doubles, UNK took the other three matches. That included a 6-1, 6-0 win by freshman Dias Meiirbek (Kazakhstan) at number three.

The men host D1 Air Force Monday at 3:30 in Harmon Park. Both teams then hit the road to face NW Missouri State on Wednesday.
