Mules Take Opener

Kearney, Neb. – Four pitchers combined on a four-hitter top help No. 10/11 Central Missouri beat Nebraska-Kearney, 7-3, Thursday night in Warrensburg, Mo.

This was the first of a three game series. Due to the Easter Holiday, all MIAA series are moved up one full day this weekend.

The Mules (22-7, 13-5) snapped a two-game losing streak by turning to "Johnny Wholestaff." Starter Brandon Reid allowed two hits, fanned three and no runs over the first 4.1 innings, sophomore Coby Seiz fanned five and allowed no earned runs in the next 3.2 innings with freshmen Mason Green and Jonathan Sprinkle holding off a Loper rally in the ninth.

Offensively, UCM scored seven runs in seven different innings and smacked three solo homers. A 10-hit attack was led by cleanup hitter Collin Nevil (3 for 4, one run) and leadoff hitter Mason Janvrin (2 for 5, two runs). Finally, nine-hole hitter and catcher Zak Whalin went 1 for 3 with two RBI's.

UNK (17-10, 10-5) got four hits from four different players and scored two in the ninth to make things a bit interesting. However, with two on and two out, Sprinkle came in and got a fly out to right.

Junior center fielder Brandon Hernandez (San Diego, Calif.) went 1 for 4 with an RBI, pushing his games reaching base to 26 straight games. On the mound, senior Mitchell Robinson (Golden, Colo.) fanned five, walked just one and gave up four earned in seven full innings.

The series resumes Friday at 2 p.m.
