Fourth Straight 1-1 Doubleheader

Kearney, Neb.  – Sophomore Erin Hallman picked up her fourth win and Papillion sophomores Alexis Howe and Sara Sempek combined for five hits and five RBI's to help Nebraska-Kearney dominate Missouri Southern State, 14-4, in the second game of a double header Friday evening in Joplin.

The Lions (19-21, 7-7) took the first game in eight innings, 6-5. UNK (12-21, 8-8) has now split its last four MIAA doubleheaders to remain seventh in the MIAA standings.

In game two, Hallman (Lakewood, Colo.) allowed two earned runs and blanked the Lions in four of the 6.1 innings she worked. Overall, Hallman stuck out four, walked two and worked around eight hits.

UNK gave Hallman all the support she needed by tallying two in the first, four in the second, two more in the fourth and five in the seventh. The Lopers finished with 14 hits, including three doubles and two homers, and also drew four walks.

Howe, batting third, went 4 for 6 with four runs and one RBI. Three spots lower in the order, Sempek finished 1 for 3 with two runs and four RBI's. Howe hit her third homer of the year, a solo shot, in the fifth with Sempek bringing home three with her fourth long ball in the seventh.

UNK erased a 3-0 third inning deficit in game one by scoring two in the fourth and three more in the fifth. However, Missouri Southern tallied two in its half of the fifth and then scored in the first extra inning to earn the win.

The Lions out hit the Lopers by a 14-4 margin but stranded 10 runners on base. Mo Southern won thanks to a walk, sac bunt and single in the eighth.

Leadoff hitter Abi Corbett (4 for 4, one run & one RBI) led the way with Taurean Guzman earning the win by throwing 3.1 innings of scoreless ball. Corbett delivered the key sac but in the eighth.

Freshman Sarah Handrahan (Festus, Mo.) took the toss but allowed just one run in three innings of work. At the plate, Sempek went 1 for 2 with a run and two RBI's.

UNK hosts Emporia State and Washburn next weekend at Patriot Park.
