No. 11 Northeastern State Takes MIAA Opener

Kearney, Neb. – The 11th-ranked Northeastern State RiverHawks took all six singles matches to down Nebraska-Kearney, 8-1, Friday afternoon in Tahlequah.

This was the MIAA opener for both teams. NSU, also ranked second in the Central Region, improves to 6-2 while UNK drops to 7-3. The Lopers came in as the Central's sixth best squad.

Kearney suffered a blow late in doubles when sophomore Ana Royo (Spain) was injured and couldn't continue. NSU's nationally-ranked duo of Molly Worden and Tatjana Stoll were up by just a 6-5 score when Royo and partner Camryn Parnell had to retire.

The Lopers did pick up a point at number three as freshman Claire Neil (Papillion) and junior Sherry Sun (China) won 8-6. In the dual season, Neil is now 5-1 in doubles playing with four different partners.

With Royo unable to return, UNK's entire singles lineup bumped up one spot. At the fourth spot, Neil battled but lost in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 6-1) to veteran Betka Gombarova. At number three singles, senior Amanda Alvarez (Spain) fell by a 7-5, 6-2 score.

UNK heads to 17th-ranked Central Oklahoma on Saturday.
