26-17

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney baseball team smacked 26 hits, including eight home runs and four doubles, to outlast Fort Hays State, 26-17, Tuesday night at Memorial Field.

The 43 combined runs is believed to be a new school record as is UNK's 26 runs. The Lopers tallied 25 runs in beating Lincoln University in 2016 and 2015. Next, the eight home runs and 26 RBI's are also believed to be new Loper records; the 2008 squad did record 27 hits in a 25-11 win at Colorado State-Pueblo.

On a day that was warm and relatively calm at Memorial Field, the two teams combined for 45 hits, including 12 homers, 10 walks, seven errors and four hit batters. There were two "Grand Slams" in the fifth inning alone; Tiger leadoff hitter and shortstop hit Alex Kaasch hit one to left with Loper redshirt freshman Josh Robinson (Golden, Colo.), a left handed batter, belting one close to the same area in the bottom of the inning.

Hays (13-23, 5-17) held leads of 3-0, 7-5, 9-5 and 13-11 before UNK tallied a seven-spot in the bottom of the fifth to take control. Robinson, who replaced a banged up Brett Young in the fourth inning, hit his "Grand Slam" after the Tigers committed an error with two down. A hit batter and single loaded the bases for Robinson who went yard for the second time as a Loper. He finished 3 for 4 with two runs and five RBI's.

Not to be outdone, sophomore first baseman Ty Roseberry (Kearney) hit two home runs, numbers 11 and 12 on the year, to go 3 for 6 with three runs and three RBI's while two-hole hitter Brandon Hernandez (San Diego, Calif.) was 4 for 7 with three runs and three RBI's. He now has reached base in 32 straight games.

Next, freshman catcher Will Olson (Millard West) was 4 for 5 with two runs and four RBI's and senior designated hitter Dallas Schramm (Millard North) finished 3 for 5 with four runs and four RBI's.

On the mound, junior Jared Bell (Clackamas, Oreg.) struck out four in 2.2 innings of relief work with senior Thomas Ruwe (Arlington) earning the win thanks to 1.1 innings of scoreless ball. Finally, junior closer Eric Sandoz (Austin, Texas) worked a clean ninth.

Hays was led by Kaasch (4 for 6, four runs & four RBI's) and third baseman Alex Weiss (4 for 6, three runs & five RBI's). Kaasch had a double besides his big homer with Weiss going yard twice.

Due to weather, UNK will now play Washburn in a double header Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday's game is cancelled with the series finale set for Sunday at a time to be announced.
