Men Win in K.C.; MIAA Tourney at UNL Up Next

Kearney, Neb. – The 24th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney men's tennis team downed Ouachita Baptist, 6-3, Thursday afternoon in Kansas City.

This was the Lopers (15-4) final regular season dual. Both UNK teams were slated to host Oklahoma Baptist Saturday but the Bison have to make up a Great American Conference dual Friday night. On the men's side, Kearney's next match will now come Tuesday in the MIAA Tournament against 37th-ranked Washburn. The semifinal battle is set for an 8 a.m. start at UNL's Dillon Tennis Center. UNK is the second-seed behind No. 10 and top-seed Southwest Baptist.

Against the OBU Tigers (2-13), UNK grabbed a 1-0 lead thanks to an 8-1 win by senior Aaron Reekie (Houston, Texas) and junior Johnnie Carmichael (England) at number three doubles. The pair is now 9-0 in the spring.

After OBU's 38th-ranked pair of Moncada and Lonneman won 8-3 in the top spot, senior Joey Richards (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and freshman Alberto Diaz (Spain) won 8-5 at number two to give Kearney the lead for good. Richards and Diaz have been nationally-ranked most of the spring and improve to 15-3 this spring.

In singles, the Tigers tied things up with a straight sets win at number three but the Lopers swept fourth through six to clinch. Richards (6-4, 7-6) had a hard fought victory at number five with Diaz rolling in his second set (7-5, 6-1) at number six.

The MIAA Tournament women's bracket finds 49th-ranked UNK (15-6) facing 13th-ranked SBU Monday at 6 p.m. The Lopers are the sixth-seed in the eight-team event. With an upset, UNK would play Tuesday at 6 p.m.
