Housholder Tosses Shutout; Six Games Left

Kearney, Neb. – Senior Meg Housholder threw a complete game three-hit shutout and freshman catcher Karlee Arnold drove in two runs to help Nebraska-Kearney beat Missouri Western State, 4-0, in the first game of a double header Friday in St. Joseph, Mo.

The Griffons (22-23, 13-7) turned the tables in game two, getting a five-hit complete game shutout from Kalli Hinds to win 3-0. Due to weather, first pitch in game one was thrown at 9 a.m.

UNK (14-27, 10-14) remains in eighth place in the MIAA standings with some games yet to be decided this weekend. The Lopers have only two MIAA contests remaining this year, a home double header next weekend vs. Fort Hays State (11-35, 7-17). The two teams will also play a non-con doubleheader.

Housholder (Parker, Colo.), in her 99th appearance in the circle, is now 7-6 after fanning four, walking just two and allowing only two singles and a double. Throwing 88 pitches, she saw her defense commit no errors with Mo West flying out 12 times. With those four K's, Housholder moves past Lisa Graff ('98) into 10th place on the career strikeout list (235).

Offensively, UNK tallied six hits and scored three in the first. Junior third baseman Cheyenne Hamilton (Frederick, Colo.) brought home the first run with a single to left and then Arnold (2 for 3) smacked a two-run single down the left field line. In the sixth, UNK added an insurance run thanks to a single, sac but, throwing error and double steal.

In the mid-morning game, Hallis (9-8) limited the Lopers to five singles. She fanned four and walked none in throwing 97 pitches. Finally, the true freshman managed nine ground outs and eight fly outs.

UNK threatened in the top of the seventh as Housholder hit a one-out single to left with senior leadoff hitter Kaela Samek (Lincoln Pius) hitting a two-out single to left center. However, Hallis got another ground out to end things.

The Griffs gave her all the support she needed by scoring two in the first. Three of the first four batters hit a single, two bringing home runs. In the fourth, left fielder Morgan Frost (3 for 3, one run & two RBI's) doubled down the line to finish the scoring.

Sophomore Erin Hallman (Lakewood, Colo.) was a tough luck loser for a second straight day. She allowed three earned on four walks and eight hits in 3.2 innings. Fellow righty Sarah Handrahan (Festus, Mo.) also walked four but shut out Mo West over the final 2.1 innings.

Weather permitting, UNK heads to Chadron State next Wednesday.
