#37 Washburn Beats #24 UNK in Semis; NCAA Show Tuesday

Kearney, Neb. – The 37th-ranked Washburn Ichabods won four singles matches to beat 24th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney, 5-3, in an MIAA Tournament semifinal match Tuesday morning in Lincoln.

UNK is hosting the three-day single elimination event at UNL's Dillon Tennis Center. The men's final will be Wednesday morning at eight with the women playing at 6 p.m.

The Lopers (15-4) are still in contention to make the 48-team NCAA Tournament. UNK was ranked second in the Central Region last week; four teams from the Central make the NCAA's this year. The selection show will be on Tuesday, April 24, at 7 p.m. Central.

During the regular season, Kearney beat Washburn (11-4) by a 7-2 count in Grand Island. However, UNK won four singles matches in three sets to come out on top. That luck continued early on today as senior Joey Richards (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and freshman Alberto Diaz (Spain) won 9-8 at number two doubles to give the Lopers a 2-1 lead. The pair are now 16-3 this spring.

However, the 'Bods won at number one, two and three singles to move ahead 4-2. One of the wins was by Aleja Valarezo Plaza who is ranked 23rd nationally in singles. He and Blake Hunter are also ranked third in D2 in doubles.

Playing at number two for the first time this spring, junior Johnnie Carmichael (England) lost 7-5 to Paul Haase in the third set to fall. Carmichael lost the first set, 6-4, but rebounded to take the second, 6-2. Loper freshman Dias Meiirbek (Kazakhstan) made it 4-3 when he won for the seventh time in his last eight matches. He bested Raul-Alin Dicu by a 6-1, 6-4 count at number four.

Diaz rebounded from an opening 6-4 loss to Chase Brill at number six to take his second set, 6-2. However, Brill took the third by another 6-4 score to clinch things for Washburn. At the same time, Richards was trailing his number five match (7-5, 2-6, 1-4).
