RiverHawks Win in Extra Innings as Robinson Sets Career Mark

Kearney, Neb. – Northeastern State hit a two-out double in the bottom of the 10th inning to get past Nebraska-Kearney, 5-4, Saturday morning in Tahlequah, Okla.

In an effort to beat the weather the Lopers (24-19, 17-12) and RiverHawks (24-18, 15-14) played a doubleheader on Friday and then started today's series finale at 9 a.m. UNK remains in fifth place in the MIAA with NSU two games back in seventh.

Senior Mitchell Robinson (Golden, Colo.) became UNK's all-time leader in starts by a pitcher when he took to the mound in the bottom of the first. This was start 49 for the four-year Loper, breaking the mark of 48 set by Jared Loschen (2007-10). By throwing six innings today, Robinson pushes his career total to 282.3, second most in school history behind Loschen (286.0).

The 'Hawks scored single runs in four straight innings to grab a 4-0 lead. At the same time junior right hander James Cowell was flummoxing UNK at the plate, throwing six shutout innings. However, UNK finally got to him on the seventh thanks to a hit batter, walk, wild pitch and two doubles. The second two bagger was hit by junior left fielder Brandon Hernandez (2 for 5) and made it a 4-3 game.

In the top of the eighth, the Lopers got back-to-back singles from senior second baseman Scott Platt (Longmont, Colo.) and redshirt shortstop Peter Carlson. With two outs, freshman catcher Will Olson (Millard South) hit a ball to third that was misplayed by NSU and brought home Platt.

A double play stopped a potential UNK rally in the ninth with NSU starting its half of the 10th inning with a hit batter. While two strikeouts followed, a dreaded two-out walk put another 'Hawk on base.  Junior two-hole hitter Oscar Resendez Jr. (3 for 6) then hit a 2-1 pitch to right center to score the game winner. Resendez Jr. and the top of the NSU order went a combined 9 for 21 with two runs and three RBI's.

Besides Hernandez (San Diego, Calif.), Carlson went 2 for 4 and junior right fielder Alex Achtermann (Denver) was 2 for 5. Robinson fanned six and walked one over the first six innings with Arlington junior Thomas Ruwe having two K's in 1.2 innings of relief work.

UNK heads to Fort Hays State (13-28, 5-22) on Wednesday night.
