Lopers and Tigers Split Again in Season Finale

Kearney, Neb. – Senior Abbey Martin and two others combined on a five-hit shutout and Nebraska-Kearney scored four runs in the sixth inning to beat Fort Hays State, 10-0 (6 innings), Monday evening in Kansas.

The Tigers got out of a bases loaded situation in the top of the seventh to win the opener, 4-3. These were the final games of the year for both the Lopers (16-29, 11-15) and Tigers (13-37, 8-18). UNK ended the year in 10th place in the MIAA standings.

Martin (Pleasant Grove, Utah) made her final collegiate appearance a good one as she blanked Hays over the first four innings. Winning for the second time this spring, she fanned one, walked one and allowed three hits.

Next, sophomore Erin Hallman (Lakewood, Colo.) and freshman Sarah Handrahan (Festus, Mo.) each tossed an inning of scoreless relief. The Tigers mustered just a hit off each Loper.

Offensively, UNK tallied four in the first, two more in the fifth and then four more in the sixth. A 15-hit attack was led by the top of the order in senior right fielder Kaela Samek (Lincoln Pius), sophomore center fielder Alexis Ray (Platte City, Mo.) and sophomore catcher Alexis Howe (Papillion-LaVista). They combined to go 8 for 11 with six runs and three RBI's.

In the first inning, sophomore first baseman Sara Sempek (Papillion-La Vista) hit a three-run homer, her fifth of the year, to get the Lopers going. She finished 2 for 4 with four RBI's.

UNK almost caught the Tigers in game one as, with two down in the seventh and trailing 4-2, three Lopers reached safely via a walk, single and error. Another error advanced each base runner but Hailey Chapman came in and got a strikeout to earn her fifth save. The Lopers end the spring 3-10 in games deiced by two runs or less.

Hays led 4-1 after three complete with two-hole hitter and center fielder Terran Caldwell (3 for 4, two RBI's) leading the way.

Ray, freshman catcher Karlee Arnold (Parker, Colo.) and junior third baseman Cheyenne Hamilton (Fredrick, Colo.) had two hits apiece with senior Meg Housholder (Parker, Colo.) blanking the Tigers in her final three collegiate innings. She fanned four and walked none.

Housholder ends up in the UNK all-time top 10 in pitching appearances (7th/101), pitching games started (6th/66) and strikeouts thrown (9th/241). She also threw 396.0 innings the past four seasons.

Finally, fifth-year senior Emilee Jonas (Omaha Skutt) got on the field today as well. While she missed the year due to injury, the infielder made a brief appearance at first base in the nightcap. That marks her 113th game in a UNK uniform.
