UNK "Ten Runs" Gorillas on Senior Day

Kearney, Neb. – Senior catcher Dallas Schramm capped a 5 for 6 by day belting a three-run "walk off" home run as Nebraska-Kearney blasted Pittsburg State, 16-4, in eight innings Saturday evening at Memorial Field.

By taking the first two games of the series, UNK (28-16, 20-12) has tied Pitt (27-19, 20-12) for fourth place in the MIAA standings. With a win in Sunday's finale the Lopers could move into the NCAA Central Region rankings; the Gorillas are currently fourth in that poll.

On "Senior Day" UNK had 20 hits, including three doubles and three home runs, and scored runs in seven innings to erase an early 2-0 deficit. While Pitt used five different pitchers, the Lopers saw junior Josh Cooper (Roseville, Calif.) go the distance. Now a team-best 7-2, the crafty lefty threw 122 pitches and fanned eight Gorillas. Cooper has 23 K's in his last 23 innings and 56 for the season.

UNK's first four hitters were a combined 9 for 19 with eight runs and nine RBI's in Friday's 10-7 win. That fearsome foursome was even more productive today as they went 13 for 22 with seven runs and another nine RBI's.31491

Batting cleanup, Schramm (Millard North) had three singles and a double before hitting career home run 38th in the eighth inning. By rule, MIAA games end if a team is ahead by 10 or more runs after seven innings.

A 2017 All-American, Schramm needs one more homer to tie Tom Bales ('88) school record and five extra base hits to break the mark of 97 set by Bronson Bosshammer ('98). Finally, Schramm is 11 RBI's shy of breaking Bales school record of 183.

Also for UNK, junior left fielder Brandon Hernandez (San Diego, Calif.) went 4 for 6 with a run and four RBI's from the two hole with junior right fielder Alex Achtermann (Denver) 2 for 5 with two runs and an RBI right behind him. In front of this pair is junior center fielder Brett Young (Lodi, Calif.) who went 2 for 5 and scored twice.

Next, redshirt freshman shortstop Peter Carlson (Arvada, Colo.) was 3 for 3 with two runs and an RBI and sophomore first baseman Ty Roseberry (Kearney) hit his 15th  homer, tying Achtermann for the team lead, in the sixth.

UNK's final home game begins Sunday at noon.
