Hornets Score Early to Even Series; Cycle for Achtermann

Kearney, Neb. – The Emporia State Hornets hit three home runs and got out to an early lead to beat Nebraska-Kearney, 12-8, Sunday afternoon in Kansas.

The Hornets (19-14, 10-10) led 3-0 after one inning and tallied five more runs in the third to tie the tie series at one. UNK (18-15, 11-8) try tried to tally, thanks to 11 hits, but stranded nine on base. The series finale is set for Monday at 1 p.m.

ESU tallied three in the first, five more in the third and two in the eighth to take control. Four of the five runs were unearned in the big third inning with Mack Gowning (3 for 5) having a two-run double in that set. E-State ended with 17 hits and left 16 runners on base. 

Empoira hung on as UNK tallied three in the seventh and one more in the eighth inning Overall, the first three Hornets in the order went a combined 11 for 14 with six RBI's and seven runs scored to power the offense. UNK countered with homers from senior second baseman Scott Platt (Longmont, Colo.) and junior outfielders Alex Achtermann (Denver) and Brett Young (Lodi, Calif.).

Emporia saw senior reliever Layne Downing allow no earned runs over the final two innings to pick up the save. Starter Tanner Cairns earned the win by giving up six earned in six full innings with six K's and four walks.

In a losing effort, Achtermann went 4 for 4 with three runs and three RBI's with junior left fielder Brandon Hernandez (San Diego, Calif.) going 3 for 4 with two runs an a RBI. Achtermann hit for "The Cycle" as he doubled in the first, homered in the third, tripled in the seventh and singled in the eighth. Finally, Hernandez has now reached safely in 30 straight games, tying a school record.
