Nationally-Ranked SBU Wins Twice in Grand Island

Kearney, Neb. – The nationally-ranked Southwest Baptist tennis teams defeated Nebraska-Kearney by identical 8-1 scores Saturday night in Grand Island.

With the with, the 11th-ranked SBU men (15-2, 5-0) win the MIAA regular season title and will be the top seed in next week's league tournament in Lincoln. The 22nd-ranked Lopers fall to 14-4 (4-1) and will be the second seed. Both squads also are 1-2 in the most recent Central Region rankings. 

On the women's side, No. 12 SBU improves to 12-3 (6-2) and will be the third seed in the MIAA's while UNK drops to 15-6 (5-4). 

In women's doubles, the nation's fifth-ranked pair of Jill Van den Dugen and Klara Vickov had a battle against freshman Zhanel Turarbek (Kazakhstan) and senior Amanda Alavarez (Spain) but managed an 8-5 win. SBU had already won the other two matches, allowing four combined points along the way.

UNK put up a fight in the first three singles matches on the court but lost two in three sets. That allowed SBU to clinch. Van den Dugen, ranked 41st nationally, got by Turarbek in the top spot (6-2, 3-6, 6-4) with Constanca Crespo getting past Papillion senior Emma Neil (7-5, 6-7, 7-6) at number four.

Alvarez notched the Lopers lone team point with a three set win at number three over Lucia Diaz (6-4, 3-6, 10-7). Finally, at number six, Beatrix Federer bested Papillion freshman Claire Neil in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 13-11).

On the men's side, SBU went 2-1 in doubles to grab the early lead. The nationally-ranked brother tandem of Ferenc and Gyorgy Agoston won 8-6 at number one to get things started with Loper senior Aaron Reekie (Houston) and junior Johnnie Carmichael (England) winning 8-4 two spots lower to tie things at one. 

The 'Cats won the first three singles matches in straight sets to secure the dual. The toughest match came at number four where Ferenc Agoston edged freshman Dias Meiirbek (Kazakhstan) by a 6-3, 7-6 (3) score.

UNK was scheduled to travel to William Jewel College Wednesday but those duals have been canceled. The Loper men will now face Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) Thursday in Kansas City with both teams hosting Oklahoma Baptist Saturday at Harmon Park.
