Two-Out Rallies Power Pitt; Top-Seed UCO Up Next

Kearney, Neb. – The Pittsburg State Gorillas used three two-out rallies to get past Nebraska-Kearney, 4-2, Thursday night in an MIAA Tournament first round game in Warrensburg, Mo.

Fourth-seeded Pitt (32-17) stays in the winner's bracket and will face eighth-seed Northeastern State Friday night. The RiverHawks (28-22) upset top-seeded Central Oklahoma, 4-2, in the third game of the day.

UNK (28-23), the fifth-seed in the tournament, and UCO (33-18) will square off in an elimination game Friday at 2 p.m. (NEW START TIME DUE TO RAIN DELAY FRIDAY MORNING). The game can be heard locally at KLPR 91.1 FM, KAMI 100.1 FM and KAMI 1580 AM. Live stats and live video via The MIAA Network are also available.

Now riding its third three-game losing streak of the year, UNK was held in check by junior lefty Brad Kinsey. Improving to 4-0 on the year, he fanned seven and allowed two earned run on two walks and six hits. Closer/third baseman Cody White (3 for 4, one RBI) worked the final 1.2 innings to pick up his 11th save, second most in the MIAA.

"What at college baseball game. That was a dog fight. That was pitch for pitch, at bat to at bat. I thought we played a very good game against a very good team. Our last two losses are similar type of situations … we did a lot of really good things but unfortunately they got some balls to fall late and executed some things better," said Loper head coach Damon Day. "That's baseball."

Loper junior lefty Josh Cooper (7-3) was the tough luck loser as he gave up one earned run over seven innings. Fanning two and walking three, he allowed 11 hits but Pitt left 12 runners on base. Cooper also (Roseville, Calif.) shut out the Gorillas between the third and fifth innings.

"Josh pitched really well tonight. (Kinsey) made some big pitches and kept us off balance," said Day. "We're not eliminated yet and now our whole goal is to try and win to get to Saturday. As the pitching starts to thin itself out a little bit that's when our offense can really take off."

Senior catcher Dallas Schramm (Millard North) gave UNK a 1-0 lead with a two-out single up the middle in the top of the first. Junior Brandon Hernandez (San Diego, Calif.) scored as he hit double number 27 with one down. Junior center fielder Brett Young (Lodi, Calif.) made sure it stayed 1-0 as he gunned down Pitt leadoff hitter Colton Pogue (2 for 2) at home plate to end the inning.

The lead, however, was short lived as Pitt took advantage of an infield error with two down to put runners at the corners in the second. Nine-hole hitter Tyson Cushman made UNK pay as he hit a single to left center. The score remained knotted at one until the sixth when Cushman reached first and then took second on a two-out error. A walk, on a 3-2 pitch, and double followed as Pitt took the lead back.

UNK responded in the top of the seventh when Young laced a triple down the right field line that scored redshirt freshman designated hitter Josh Robinson (2 for 3). However, Young remained at third as Kinsey fanned the last batter he faced.

Cooper retired the first two batters in the bottom of the inning but a single, walk and another single gave Pitt the lead for good. They added an insurance run in the eighth thanks to a double and a one-out base knock.

"It's a good matchup (with UCO) for us and probably for them too. We haven't seen each other since February and both teams look a lot different," said Day.
