Week 8 Preview: Final Home Games of 2019

10/24/2019 4:08:00 PM

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's soccer team finishes up its 2019 home slate this weekend with games against Northeastern State and MIAA newcomer Rogers State.

UNK (1-7-6, 0-3-4; 4 points) is still in the hunt for the eight-team MIAA Tournament. The Lopers end the regular season next weekend at Emporia State and Fort Hays State.

There are special events for both games as it'll be a "Pink Out", for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, on Friday with "Senior Day" set for Sunday. UNK has five seniors on the roster and they'll be honored in a post-game ceremony. Check the soccer schedule page for kickoff times and media links.

The Lopers bested NSU (10-3-1, 5-2-0) last year in Cope Stadium, getting a goal from Ciera Clark at 109:16 to win 2-1 in double OT. UNK grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute with the RiverHawks tallying the equalizer with 10 minutes left in regulation. Kearney is 2-4-1 all-time vs. NSU.

The 'Hawks come in ranked second in the MIAA in both shots (17.7) and shots on goal (9.3) per game. NSU is 4-1-1 in true road games and riding a five-game win streak.

This will be the first time an RSU Hillcat team (5-6-3, 2-3-2) comes to the UNK campus. RSU doesn't sponsor women's volleyball and the Loper home women's golf tourney in September was held in Axtell.

A former member of the now defunct Heartland Conference, Rogers hails from Claremore, Okla., and has never faced a UNK soccer team. The 'Cats are 2-4-0 away from home and coming off a 2-1 OT win at Missouri Western State. They are at Hays on Friday evening.

Rogers and UNK are tied for the MIAA lead in saves per game, each recording 98 (7.00 avg.). Both squads also have five shut outs with the Lopers having two of those efforts coming at home.
