Home Finale Ends in Seventh Tie; Five Seniors Honored

Kearney, Neb. – Senior keepers Emily Thuss and Allie Prososki combined for seven saves as Nebraska-Kearney and Rogers (Okla.) State ended in a scoreless tie Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

This was UNK's final home game of the 2019 season. The Lopers (2-7-7, 1-3-5) have now had five scoreless draws this fall and are two ties shy of tying the NCAA Division II record (9, Cal State Chico, 2009). Kearney's last regular season games are at Emporia State and Fort Hays State next weekend.

After today's knot with the Hillcats (5-6, 2-3-4) UNK has eight league points, good for 10th place in the MIAA standings. The top eight teams advance to the postseason tournament; there currently is a three-way tie for sixth with each squad at 10 points.

In a game with 21 corners and 28 shots, the play of the game came early in the second overtime when RSU's leading scorer on the year, sophomore Laurelle Theodore, got free on a breakaway down the center of the field. Facing a one-on-one situation Prososki made a diving save to her right to block Thedore's potential game winning goal. Prososki stopped another shot a minute later with the 'Cats having a last second attempt bang off the post.

Out shooting Rogers by an 18-10 margin UNK saw senior defender Molly Willis line up for a free kick in the 99th minute. Her shot from about 30 yards was on target but RSU keeper ReVella Fisher caught it before losing control of the ball. However it went straight up in the air and was knocked over the goal.

Another Loper senior, Megan Merkel (Millard West), fired off eight shots to once again tie the Loper game record. Three were on goal with Norfolk senior Maddie Love getting off three shots while South Dakota junior Kassidy Kirsch and Kearney freshman Hannah Hardy had two apiece.

Thuss (Raymore, Mo.) had five saves in the first half with Prososki (Kearney Catholic) playing after the break and managing two in 65 minutes of work. The duo's seven shutouts are one off the UNK season record (2013 and 2016). Finally Love, Merkel and Willis went all 110 minutes as did three others.
