Productive Weekend in Sioux City

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney Aqualopers had a busy weekend, placing fourth (47 points) at the Morningside Stampede Friday night and coming in fifth (282 points) in the Mustang Invitational on Saturday.

Both events were held in Sioux City, Ia., at the Hindman-Hobbs Center Natatorium.

On Friday UNK finished ahead of the host Morningside College Mustangs (43 points) in a five-team meet. Iowa Central C.C. (75) nipped Southwest Minnesota State (69) for first with Barton C.C. (52) just ahead of the Aqualopers.

The highlight came in the final event as UNK's 400 free relay team won in 3:50.00. Good for 14 team points, the time bested the pool record of 3:51.07 set by Northern State back in 2010. The foursome including freshmen Audrey Stelling (Norfolk) and Olivia Forrest (Danvers, Ill.), sophomore Claire Nash (Overland Park, Kan.) and senior Mikara Feit (Lincoln Northeast).

To start the meet the Aqualopers were fourth in the 400 medley relay (4:19.02) with Nash swimming anchor and Forrest on the lead. UNK then went on to have eight top 10 finishes in individual events led by Forrest being runner up in the 100 butterfly (1:03.20). Right behind her in third was Oakland junior Andrea Werner (1:04.14).

Next Feit was third in the 1,000 free (11:55.22) and Nash took the bronze in the 100 free (56.77). Finally Stelling finished fifth in the 200 free (2:08.59) with sophomore Emily Wheeler (Omaha Burke) fifth in the 500 free (6:18.32).

The Invite field on Saturday featured 10 teams with UNK swimming past Midland, the host Mustangs, the College of Saint Mary, Iowa Lakes C.C., and the University of St. Mary (KS). Augustana scored 751 points to win with Barton (590) the runner up.

Nash was UNK's top point scorer (50) as she was third in the 100 free (56.51), fifth in the 50 free (25.91), and 11th in the 200 free (2:09.29). She also was the anchor for the seventh place 200 free relay team that came in seventh (1:45.91) to score 32 more points.

Feit (36) and Forrest (35) also were on that foursome and combined for 71 points in individual events. Forrest led UNK in the 200 individual medley (7th/2:22.97) and 100 backstroke (9th/1:05.72) with Feit doing the same in the 400 I.M. (4th/5:17.88). Finally Stelling was 10th in the 50 free (26.34) and 13th in the 100 back (1:07.81).

The Aqualopers head to Eastern Iowa for the Kohwak Invite on November 22-23.
