ECU Tigers Use Late Surge to Win 86-78

Kearney, Neb. – Senior guard Camron Talley scored 34 points and the East Central Tigers went on a late 7-0 run to edge Nebraska-Kearney, 86-78, Saturday night in Shawnee, Okla.

The game was part of the Bison Conference Challenge. Host Oklahoma Baptist (2-0) downed Wayne State (0-5), 83-58, in the nightcap.

The ECU Tigers, from Ada, Okla., and the Great American Conference, are now 2-0 thanks to the heroics of Talley and big surge in the final 3:59. The GAC's third leading scorer (20.5) last season, Talley made 12 of 24 shots (6 of 14) tonight as well as going 4 of 4 at the line, having four assists and only one turnover in playing all 40 minutes.

UNK countered that effort by having four score in double digits including a team-high 20 from Bellevue senior post AJ Jackson. Fellow senior Kyle Juhl (Harlan, Ia.) knocked down a bucket in the lane with 3:59 to knot things up at 76. The Lopers had led by as many as 10 points in the early going but ECU led by four at the break and it was a nip and tuck affair from then on.

East Central got a steal and then a three-point play from senior wing Jalan Brown to grab the lead for good at 79-76. UNK missed its next two shots with Brown sinking two free throws to increase the deficit. Finally a fast break layup from sophomore guard Gerren Jackson capped the 7-0 run at the 1:54 mark.

Both teams shot well, Kearney coming in at 47% (30 of 64) and ECU at 51% (29 of 57). UNK made seven more threes and each squad grabbed 32 boards with the Tigers committing six more turnovers, 15-9.

Jackson went 8 of 8 from the field and 3 of 4 at the line to be just two points off his career-high point total. He also had four dimes and two boards in playing 25 minutes. Next Juhl had his first career double double (17 pts., 11 rebs.) with nine of his caroms coming at the defensive end. Finally Utah junior newcomer Jake Walker had 14 points, six boards, three steals, and two times.

East Central, besides Talley, got 17 points from starter Tylor Arnold and 13 boards from starting post Josh Apple.

UNK hosts Chadron State (0-2) Wednesday night.
