Day Two Yields Another Revenge Win

Kearney, Neb. – Three starters scored in double figures and Nebraska-Kearney grabbed 16 offensive rebounds to hold off Wayne State, 83-79, Saturday night at the Health & Sports Center.

The game was part of the UNK Crossover Tournament. Northwest Missouri edged Minnesota-Crookston, 66-64, in the early contest.

The Lopers (2-0) avenged a 2018-19 loss to UMC last night and did the same tonight against the rival Wildcats (1-1). UNK erased a 16-12 first quarter deficit by scoring 26 points in the second quarter and then held on in the waning moments to start 2-0 for the second time in the last three years.

"It was two teams that were scoring it pretty well for good stretches. We made some really nice offensive plays and they made some as well. Sometimes this early in the season it can kind of be a slugfest with figuring out who can be the best defensively," UNK head coach Carrie Eighmey said. "Our first two games we've had a pretty good showing offensively which is good to see."

Elkhorn sophomore post Brooke Carlson, after scoring a career-high 22 points in a 79-69 over Crookston on Friday, tallied 16 of her team-high 20 in the second half tonight. Iowa sophomore wing Maegan Holt chipped in 12 of her 17 points after the break as the Lopers saw a 75-65 fourth quarter lead whittled to three by the 2:22 mark.

A put back layup by Carlson made it 79-74 and then Colorado graduate transfer Haley Simental made one of two free throws to make it a six-point lead with 2:04 left. UNK could've salted things away much earlier but was 18 of 35 (51.4%) from the charity stripe.

"We've tried to make that (o-boards) an emphasis this year. Anytime you can create extra opportunities and extra possessions for an even a better shot … a lot of times second chances are easier shots. It's something we knew size-wise and athletically we should be able to do better than we did last year," Eighemy said. "We've been improving there in practice and know we're seeing it in games."

Shooting 56% (10 of 18) in the second quarter and 50% (6 of 12) over the final 10 minutes, UNK's o-bard work led to 13 second chance points. The Lopers also got 20 points off its bench and limited WSC to 41% fielg goal shooting on the night.

Carlson reached her point total by making 9 of 17 shots while grabbing 10 rebounds (three offensive), making this her first career double double. Holt went 3 of 3 from behind the arch to tally her 17 points with Crofton junior Kelsey Sanger (10) scoring in double figures thanks to four bucks and two freebies.

Also for the Lopers, South Dakota sophomore guard Klaire Kirsch had an all-around effort (nine points, eight boards, six dimes, and four steals) with Wahoo sophomore Aspen Jansa having a second straight productive game off the bench. She had seven points and four boards in 14 minutes of work.

WSC had four score in double digits including star forward Erin Norling (18) and post Brittany Bongartz (19).

UNK heads to Hays, Kan., next weekend to face Cameron (OK) and former RMAC rival Adams State.
