Basketball and Beaches: Lopers Heading to Puerto Rico

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team heads to sunny and warm Puerto Rico on Wednesday for two games in the "Puerto Rico Clasico" in San Juan.

UNK (10-1) leaves early Wednesday morning out of Omaha with games slated for Thursday and Friday at 4:30 p.m. Central. The Lopers get to sight see on Saturday before leaving early Sunday morning for home. Schedule

The Lopers will face (English translation) the University of Sacred Heart on Thursday and Division II-member Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on Friday. Fans can watch the games via Facebook Live (https://www.facebook.com/prclasico/) with a live stat link TBA. Check UNK Athletics Twitter for updates throughout the weekend.

The tournament, featuring NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA schools, is being held at San Juan University College, Ruben Rodríguez Coliseum and Mario Morales Coliseum. UNK is slated to face USH at San Juan U.C. on Thursday and then heads over to Ruben Rodriguez to face UPRM, a D2 member, the following day.

After sinking 48 three pointers in its last two contests, UNK now leads all of D2 in 3's made per game (11.4) as well as scoring margin (+32.6). Twelve different players have made at least one triple with seven having hit at least 10. The leaders to date are grad transfer Haley Simental (24) and Wahoo sophomore guard Aspen Jansa (20).

Ripping off efforts of 106 and 127 points, respectively, Kearney also ranks in the national top five in assists per game (20.3), overall assists (223), and assist-to-turnover ratio (+1.59).

After the Division II moratorium (no games or practices between Dec. 23-29), UNK will return to the Health & Sports Center to prep for MIAA games on January 4 (Pittsburg State) and January 6 (Missouri Southern State). Note those games are a Saturday afternoon-Monday night format.
