Kearney, Neb. – The second-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team closed on the fall semester by going 1-1 at the Augustana Duals Friday in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The short-handed Lopers (3-2) beat Wisconsin-Parkside, 28-15, in the morning and then fell to event host Augustana, 25-12, in the afternoon. In both duals UNK took forfeits at 125 and 133 pounds, giving the opposition 12 free points.

It didn't matter against the Parkside Rangers (1-3) as the Lopers won by forfeit at 149 pounds, got a fall in 1:30 from South Carolina junior Talon Seitz (174 lbs.) and a 9-0 major decision from Geneva senior Jarrod Hinrichs (285 lbs.). Finally Illinois sophomore Andrew Demos recorded a takedown in the third period to win 7-5 at 197 pounds with top-ranked Matt Malcom slipping by Shane Gantz at 165 pounds, 4-2, thanks to a first period takedown.

Things were different against the Vikings (2-2) who, besides the forfeits, had three wins by decision and a major decision. One of those decisions came at 141 pounds where Hunter Burnett used a 2-point near fall and two takedowns to get past Lincoln junior Wesley Dawkins, 9-4. The defending national champ at 133 pounds will drop down to that weight next semester.

UNK did see Hinrichs win by a 10-8 margin in sudden-victory as he recorded a takedown in extra time. A wild third period saw 12 points scored including three takedowns by Hinrichs. Finally Malcom (7-1) and Seitz (4-3) won again.

Kearney is now off until January 4, 2020, when it takes part in the annual Viking-Warrior Open in Fremont.
