Golden Bears Rally Past the Lopers in Eight Innings

Kearney, Neb. – The Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears scored with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and then got a walk off single in the eighth to rally past Nebraska-Kearney, 3-2, Friday night in Minnesota.

The games are part of the annual Kelly Laas Memorial Invite held inside St. Cloud State's Husky Dome. In the 2019 season opener, SCSU scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to beat UNK, 9-1.

Redshirt freshman southpaw Mo Vornhagen (Kearney H.S.) was just one out from tossing a complete game two-hitter. However, CU drew back-to-back walks and then freshman pinch hitter Katie Carlson laced a ground run double to right to tie things at two.

Sophomore Sarah Handrahan (Festus, Mo.) got a pop up to end the inning but UNK grounded out three times in hits half of the eighth. With the international tie breaking rule in effect (a runner at second to start extra innings), CU got a leadoff single from two-hole hitter Justine Schattner to record the win.

Vorhagen, in her second collegiate appearance, fanned six, walked three and allowed one earned run in 6.2 innings. UNK out hit CU by a 7-4 margin with leadoff hitter and right fielder Jasymn Broussard (Millard North) going 2 for 4 with two runs and freshman leftfielder Carlee Liesch (Lincoln Pius) finishing 3 for 3 from the six hole. CU junior Aryka Knoche went the distance, striking out four and walking only one Loper.

In the early game, UNK scored a run in the top of the first but was limited by senior Kate Kopeck the rest of the way. She had nine K's, two walks and surrendered one earned on four hits. Junior first baseman Sara Sempek (Papillion-LaVista) went 1 for 2 with an RBI to pace the Loper offense.

SCSU scored three times in the bottom of the second to grab a 3-1 lead; two of the runs were of the unearned variety. Starter Erin Hallman (Lakewood, Colo.) gave up just one run over the next two innings but the first two Huskies reached safely in the fifth. After a pitching change, St. Cloud wasn't put out again with a three-run triple being the biggest blow. The Huskies ninth and first batters were a combined 4 for 6 with five RBI's and a run scored.

UNK faces CU Saturday at 11 a.m. and Minnesota State at 8 p.m.
