Handrahan Complete Game Lifts the Lopers over PNW

Kearney, Neb. – Sophomore Sarah Handrahan tossed her first career complete game and the first five batters in the lineup had two hits apiece to help Nebraska-Kearney beat Purdue Northwest, 3-1, Friday morning in Peoria, Ill.

The game was part of the Springfield Invited held inside the Peoria Slugger Dome. The two-day event was hosted by Illinois-Springfield.

In a rare 7 a.m. game Friday, the Lopers fell to the Quincy (Ill.) Hawks by a 12-5 score. QU is a member of the GLVC (Great Lakes Valley Conf.) while PNW, a new D2 school, is part of the GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conf.).

Handrahan (Festus, Mo.), now with three wins in her young collegiate career, struck out seven and walked just one in throwing 101 pitches. She surrendered only four singles and hit one batter while blanking the Pride (3-2) over the final six innings. Fittingly, Handrahan capped the strong effort with a K to end the game.

UNK (2-10) out hit PNW by a 13-4 margin with both teams leaving six runners on base. The Lopers scored two in the bottom of the second and another in the third to win. Omaha freshman left fielder and leadoff hitter Jasmyn Broussard went 2 for 3 with two RBI's while Kearney freshman catcher Avery Wood was 2 for 3 with a run scored from the eight hole.

Quincy (3-4) took advantage of four Loper errors to score eight unearned runs in the first game. The Hawks also had 13 hits, including five doubles, and took advantage of three walks to score multiple runs in four different innings.

Handrahan threw the final 3.2 innings and gave up just one earned run while fanning five and issuing zero walks. At the plate the Lopers were led by Colorado sophomore catcher Karlee Arnold (2 for 3, one run & two RBI's) and Papillion junior first baseman Sara Sempek (1 for 4, two RBI's).

Weather permitting UNK heads to Southwest Baptist and Central Missouri next weekend to start league play.
