First Dual in Warm South Carolina

Kearney, Neb. – The Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars won five singles matches to down Nebraska-Kearney, 5-2, Thursday afternoon in Hilton Head, S.C.

This dual was part of the Lopers (8-8) annual "Spring Break" trip to a warmer part of the country. UNK is scheduled to face Indiana (Pa.) and Division I La Salle (Pa.) on Friday with another dual against an opponent TBD over the weekend.

UIS (9-2), from the Great Lakes Valley Conference, lost the doubles point as Kearney swept all three matchups. Senior Camryn Parnell (Lee's Summit, Mo.) and freshman Fidan Ibrahimova (Lincoln S.E.) won 6-4 at number three with sophomore Claire Neil (Papillion) and freshman Pranathi Gannavaram (Lee's Summit, Mo.) winning 7-5 a spot higher in the lineup. Finally, sophomore Zhanel Turarbek (Khazakstan) and freshman Vasilisa Polunova (Russia) rolled 6-2 in the top spot.

UNK improves to 28-20 in doubles this dual season including 11 wins from the third spot by five different tandems.

The Prairie Stars rallied by taking one through three singles in straight sets and winning third-set tie breakers at number four and six. Turarbek tallied UNK's other point with a 6-1, 7-5 victory at number two. This is her sixth singles win in duals this year.

UIS's key three-set wins came when Kena Bere (10-8) and Nethra Theppan (10-7) each won at four and six, respectively.
