UNK Walks Off the Lions, 2-1; New Road Games Wednesday

Kearney, Neb. – Freshman right fielder Jasmyn Broussard hit a walk-off bloop single to help Nebraska-Kearney edge Missouri Southern State, 2-1, in the second game of a double header Monday afternoon in Great Bend, Kan.

The Lions used five home runs to take the first game in six innings, 12-4. This MIAA double header was originally set to be played at Patriot Park in Kearney but moved three hours South to Barton Community College due to weather and field conditions.

UNK (3-13, 1-3) never trailed in the night cap, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after freshman left fielder Carlee Liesch (2 for 4) laced a triple to right center and came home on a single by junior center fielder Alexis Ray (Platte City, Mo.).

However, the Lopers stranded 10 runners over the next six innings to give the Lions (9-10, 2-4) a chance. They were shut down by redshirt freshman starter Mo Vornhagen (Kearney H.S.) but scratched a run across the plate in the top of the sixth thanks to leadoff walk, sac but and double. Junior Erin Hallman (Lakewood, Colo.) got a strike out and ground out to get out of the jam and then worked a clean seventh.

Junior designated player Alexis Howe (Papillion-LaVista) was plunked to start the Loper seventh and then advanced to third after a text book sac bunt by senior third baseman Cheyenne Hamilton (Frederick, Colo.). The ball was fielded cleanly by the MSSU third baseman but an errant throw went down the right field line.

A stolen base and an intentional walk followed to load the bases with no outs. That brought up Broussard (3 for 4) who promptly hit a high fly ball to short center that a diving Tori Frazier couldn't catch. Even a highlight grab likely would've brought home pinch runner Lauren Struebing (Kearney H.S.) via sac fly.

"It's nice to see us put it together in one of these close games and come up with a win. And it's big for a young player (Broussard) to be able get the job done at the plate," said Loper head coach Holly Carnes.

Hallman picked up the win with Vorhagen fanning two, walking none and allowing just four hits over the first five innings. She threw four scoreless innings in game two on Sunday vs. Pittsburg State. Offensively, UNK out hit MSSU 10-5 with Colorado sophomore catcher Karlee Arnold going 2 for 3, joining Liesch (Lincoln Pius X) and Broussard (Millard North) as Lopers to have multi-hit efforts.

In game one, the Lions jumped out to a 5-0 lead after a half inning thanks to a "Grand Slam" by third baseman Ashley Caldarella. The Loper pitching staff had allowed only three long balls over the first 14 games but four other MSSU players joined Caldarella by going yard.

Catcher Angel Badalamenti led a 15-hit attack by going 4 for 4 with two RBI's from the eight hole with Tauren Guzman scattering seven hits over five full innings to pick up her second win. For the Lopers, Hamilton, Howe and Liesch had two hits apiece with junior shortstop Kaitlyn Johnson (Kearney H.S.) going 3 for 3 with an RBI and run scored from the nine hole.

"We've haven't see a lot of balls outside, our outfielders haven't see balls in flight. It's been one of those interesting years with the weather," said Carnes. " It's amazing to be outside in this 55 degree weather. I think this was the fourth time we've been able to take ground balls on any surface other than in Cushing Coliseum and Foster Field."

UNK's scheduled double header at Regis in Denver on Tuesday has been scrapped. Kearney now will play a double header at NAIA MidAmerica Nazarene Wednesday night and then continue to head East to face Lincoln and Lindenwood.
