Four Homers Lead to Sweep in Bolivar

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney softball team hit four more home runs and hung on to sweep Southwest Baptist, 9-3 and 4-2, Friday afternoon in Bolivar, Mo.

This is MIAA "makeup weekend" as teams are playing games that were postponed from earlier this season. UNK (17-21, 11-11) was scheduled to face SBU (5-42, 2-18) back on March 8th.

In game one, freshman sensation Carlee Liesch (2 for 5, two runs) and junior catcher Alexis Howe (1 for 3, two runs) each hit two-run homers and had three RBI's apiece with Colorado junior Erin Hallman (7-10) tossing an eight-hit complete game.

Liesch (Lincoln Pius X), going 2 for 4 with two doubles in the night cap, has now hit safely in 13 straight games. Her season numbers (.478, 64 hits, 7 HR's, 46 runs) are among the best in NCAA Division II. She is on pace to break the single season UNK record for batting average (.460) with her hit and runs scored totals already in the UNK all-time top 11.

UNK broke open a scoreless second game with a three-run fifth, highlighted by a two out, two-run shot to right center by senior third baseman Cheyenne Hamilton (Frederick, Colo.). That is her team-leading eighth long ball of the spring.

SBU, heading to the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) next season, tried to rally from a 4-0 hole in the bottom of the seventh. A leadoff walk, infield single, throwing error and a ground out brought home one run and then a hit batter loaded the bases with just one down. Kansas redshirt freshman Megan Blake earned her first collegiate save by getting a swinging strikeout and a pop up to left to end the threat and game.

Colorado sophomore designated player Karlee Arnold (2 for 2) joined Liesch and Hamilton as Lopers with multi-hit efforts in the second game. She belted her sixth homer, a solo, to start the sixth. Finally, Missouri sophomore Sarah Handrahan won for the seventh time by throwing five shutout innings.

As a team Kearney now has 34 dingers this spring, 19 more than it has surrendered. The Lopers need 11 more to crack the all-time top five in school history.

UNK heads over to Warrensburg, Mo., on Saturday to face the regionally-ranked Jennies (27-16, 11-6). UCM won its first game Friday over Fort Hays State, 4-3.
