Pitching Gems, Timely Hits Equal Sweep of Second Place NSU

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Erin Hallman and sophomore Sarah Handrahan tossed complete games and junior designated player/catcher Alexis Howe went a combined 5 for 5 to help Nebraska-Kearney sweep a double header from Northeastern State, 3-1 and 2-1, Tuesday afternoon at Patriot Park.

UNK improves to 10-16 (6-6) while NSU, who came into the day in second place in the league standings, falls to 20-15 (8-4).

Hallman (Lakewood, Colo.) won for the fourth time this spring by allowing five hits, two walks and no earned runs in the opener. Handrahan (Festus, Mo.) also tossed a five-hitter, fanning three, walking three and give up one earned run in the night cap. She is now a team best 5-5.

Howe (Papillion-LaVista H.S.), batting third in the order, went 2 for 2 with two RBI's in game one and was 3 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI's in the second game. She smacked a one-out double to left center in the bottom of the third in game one to make it 2-1. Howe also recorded the game winning RBI in the second contest as her one-out double down the left field line provided the day's final run. 35157

"We keep talking about having a chip on our shoulder because we're the most Northern school in the league. So we've got to be able to continue to fight and we keep saying we're just there. When we get a taste of winning this team is going to be good," said Loper head coach Holly Carnes.

UNK grabbed a 1-0 lead in game one as Howe delivered an RBI single to left center in the bottom of the first. The RiverHawks tied things in the second thanks to an errant throw and then had two on with no outs in the top of the fourth. After a sac bunt moved up the runners, Hallman got a line out and ground out to get out of the jam.

Sophomore designated player Karlee Arnold (Parker, Colo.) belted a "seeing eye" dinger down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth to provide a key insurance run. Finally, freshman right fielder Carlee Liesch (Lincoln Pius) went 2 for 3 with two runs from the leadoff spot.

Liesch (2 for 4, one run) and Arnold (2 for 3) joined Howe as Lopers to have a multi-hit effort in game two. However, the Lopers stranded two runners in each of the first two innings as NSU's Sydney Balderrama (7-7) got a couple of ground outs and a fly out to keep thiings scoreless.

Second baseman Madison Boyd (2 for 4) became the first 'Hawk softball player to reach the 200 career hit milestone with an RBI double in the third. Handrahan got out of that inning with just one run and then wiggled out of a one-out, bases loaded situation in the fourth thanks to a grounder to second and a strike out.

Howe belted her second dinger of the year, a shot to left center, to tie things up in the third and then Liesch led off the fifth with an opposite field double. After a sac but, Howe delivered the game winner. NSU did make things very interesting in the top of the sixth but junior center fielder Alexis Ray (Platte City, Mo.) made a diving catch towards the fence to keep UNK in the lead. NSU had runners at second and third when Ray recorded the inning-ending out.

The Lopers host Northwest Missouri State (9-14, 4-6) and Missouri Western State (19-14, 6-5) this weekend at Patriot.
