Season Ends with Sweep of Tigers; Hamilton & Howe Bow Out in Style

Kearney, Neb. – Senior third baseman Cheyenne Hamilton hit walk-off double down the left field line to help Nebraska-Kearney beat Fort Hays State, 12-4 (5 innings), in the second game of a double header Sunday afternoon at Dryden Park.

UNK also took the first game, 2-1, to finish up at 20-24. This is the most wins for a Loper team since 2012 as they ended the spring 6-4 in true home contests, 11-8 on the road and 18-11 over its final 29 games.35332

On Saturday Hays (24-25) out scored UNK 17-1 thanks to a 30-8 margin in the hit column. In today's non-conference double dip, the Lopers flipped the script to a 26-12 advantage in hits and a 14-5 margin on the scoreboard.

Starting all 89 games in her two-year Kearney career, Hamilton (Frederick, Colo.) made her last collegiate appearance a memorable one as she hit a two-run opposite field homer to left center in the fourth and then ended things with a bloop double to left in the fifth. Fittingly, junior left fielder Alexis Howe (Papillion-LaVista) scored the game winner. The three-year team member wrapped up her collegiate career as well today, going 4 for 4 with four RBI's and three runs scored in game two.

Redshirt freshman lefty Mo Vornhagen (Kearney) earned her second win of 2019 by throwing three innings of scoreless relief. She allowed just one hit and got out of a bases loaded jam in the third thanks to two K's and fly out to right.

Hamilton, batting right behind Howe, went 3 for 4 with three RBI's and sophomore catcher Karlee Arnold (Parker, Colo.) belted a "Grand Slam" in the third to bust things open. Hamilton ends the year with a team-best 10 HR's with Arnold having seven to tie for second.

35329UNK out hit Hays 10-4 in game one but left nine runners on base. A two-out error prolonged the bottom of the fifth and the Lopers took advantage, scoring the game winner on an RBI single to center by freshman left fielder Jasmyn Broussard (Millard North).

Vornhagen earned her first collegiate save by throwing two scoreless innings with junior Erin Hallman (Lakewood, Colo.) earning her eight win by allowing just two hits in five full innings. Finally, junior center fielder Alexis Ray (Platte City, Mo.) made a leaping catch at the wall to start the seventh, preventing a likely Tiger double.
