Six Home Runs Helps UNK Sweep Hastings

Kearney Neb. – Junior Erin Hallman picked up two saves and Nebraska-Kearney belted six home runs to sweep a double header from Hastings College, 12-2 (6 innings) and 8-6, Tuesday night in Hastings.

The Lopers improve to 14-18 while the NAIA Broncos fall to 10-6.

Hallman (Lakewood, Colo.) shook off a recent injury to throw 3.2 scoreless innings tonight. She worked the final 1.2 innings in game one and then tossed the final two innings of the nightcap. Now with three saves this year, Hallman didn't allow a hit while fanning two over 38 pitches.

Junior infielder Kaitlyn Johnson (Kearney) and sophomore outfielder Emma Osowski (Omaha Skutt) homered in each contest, their first two long balls of their collegiate careers. Also going yard was junior catcher/designated player Alexis Howe (Papillion-LaVista) and freshman infielder Abbie Vodicka (Lincoln Pius). Both now have three dingers in 2019.

In game one UNK busted things open with an eight-run sixth. The big set featured three-run homers by both Osowski and Howe with Vodicka following Osowski's shot with one of her own.

Hastings had used four consecutive singles to score once in the bottom of the fifth and make it a 4-2 ball game. However, Hallman came in and extinguished the rally thanks to an infield pop up and fielder's choice.

Four different Lopers ended with two hits including Howe and freshman outfielder Lauren Struebing (Kearney) who also batted leadoff in both contests. Finally, Missouri sophomore Sarah Handrahan picked up her sixth win by scattering nine hits and two walks over 4.1 innings.

Kansas freshman righty Megan Blake worked out of several jams to win the second game. Hastings stranded 10 base runners as they left the bases loaded in the first and second innings. Blake (2-0) gave up four earned runs on 11 hits and three walks in five full innings of work.

The Broncos cut into an 8-2 hole with a four-run sixth. Third baseman Julia Reimer (4 for 4, one RBI) had a run scoring single in the big inning but Blake got a ground out to short to stop the bleeding.

For UNK Osowski had another three-run homer while Struebing, freshman catcher Avery Wood (Kearney) and redshirt freshman Chloe Murphy (Ashland) had two hits apiece.

UNK heads to Washburn and Emporia State this Friday and Saturday.
