Tigers Strike Early to Win

Kearney, Neb. – The Fort Hays State Tigers scored two first half goals to down Nebraska-Kearney, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

This was a non-conference contest; the MIAA tilt between the two rivals will come on Friday, November 1, in Kansas.

Now 3-2-0 on the year, the Tigers got goals from senior Darby Hirsch in the 19th minute and junior midfielder Olympia Katsouridis 14 minutes later. Hirsch intercepted a UNK (1-3-2) goal kick to tally her first goal of 2019 with Katsouridis taking a pass from senior midfielder Chloe Montano and using her left foot to score from 10 yards out.

It was a defensive struggle as the teams combined just seven shots and three corners. Tiger senior keeper Megan Kneefel won for the second time this fall as she went all 90 minutes and stopped a shot taken by Kearney freshman Hannah Hardy in the 68th minute. That was UNK's lone shot on the day.

Senior keepers Allie Prososki (Kearney Catholic) and Emily Thuss (Raymore, Mo.) split time today, Thuss taking the first 45 minutes and Prososki coming in after the break. Finally, senior Molly Willis (Kearney) and junior Megan Cook (Bellevue West) went all 90 minutes for the Lopers.

UNK hosts Emporia State and Washburn next weekend at Foster Field.
