UNK Has Solid Tourney Showing at Augie

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team won 14 singles and eight doubles matches this weekend the Augustana invite in Sioux Falls.

The two-day tournament featured six singles and three doubles brackets. The field consisted of the Lopers, the host Vikings, Missouri Western State, Sioux Falls, Rockhurst and Mary. 

Junior newcomer Anastasia Kuzevanova (Czech Republic) went 3-0 to place first in the "C" singles bracket and teamed with junior Zhanel Turarbek (Kazakhstan) to go 2-1 to finish third in the "A" doubles draw. Kuzeanova earned her singles title thanks to a 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 win over Augie's Grace Goble in the finals. She and Turarbek beat teams from Rockhurst and Mary in doubles.

Next, Turarbek and sophomore Pranathi Gannavaram (Lee's Summit, Mo.) both went 2-1 in singles to finisher runner up in the "A" and "E" draws, respectively. Turarbek had a hard fought 7-6 (1), 7-5 win in round one before rolling in the semis while Gannavaram bested Mo West's Mireia Birosta by a 6-3, 7-5 score in the semis. Finally in singles, Holdrege freshman Kaylin Brown was runner up in the "F" draw thanks to nail-biting 6-3, 1-6, 10-8 win in the semis against Megan Lantz of Rockhurst.

Besides Turarbek and Kuzeanova, UNK's three other doubles teams all placed in the top five. That included Gannavaram and freshman Thi Huynh (Lincoln North Star) finishing second in the "C" bracket thanks to a 2-1 mark. They won by scores of 8-2 and 6-3.

The Lopers head to Moorhead, Minn., next weekend to face the MSU-Moorhead Dragons and Concordia College Cobbers. On the way back home UNK will then face the USF Cougars.
