Early Goal Allows 'Bods to Take MIAA Opener

Kearney, Neb. – Junior midfielder Tera Lynch scored in the fifth minute to help Washburn defeat Nebraska-Kearney, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

This was the MIAA opener for both teams. The Ichabods (5-2-0) handed the Lopers (1-5-2) a similar 1-0 setback in a non-conference game last weekend in Topeka.

This time around WU had a 12-9 shot advantage with UNK taking all four corners in the game. The Lopers held the 'Bods to just one shot over the final 45 minutes but couldn't get a ball past Lincoln freshman keeper Raegan Wells.

Lynch, a two-time All-MIAA pick, scored for the first time in 2019 when she fired away from about 25 yards out. Senior keeper Allie Prososki (Kearney Catholic) momentarily managed to get her hands on the ball but it still went past her and into the net.

Sophomore Mackenzie Menke (three) and Papillion sophomore Sydney Rosemann (two) combined for five of the WU shots with Lynch and junior Paige Ledesma adding five more. Prososki finished with six saves, pushing her season total to 39.

Offensively Kearney was paced by Omaha senior Megan Merkel who had a team-best four shots with one being on goal. That effort came at 89:20 and was stopped by Wells. Senior co-captain Molly Willis (Kearney) also almost tied the game but Wells knocked down her shot in the 85th minute.

UNK begins a two week road trip Friday night in Wichita against MIAA newcomer Newman.
