Reserves Go 2-1 at the Fairgrounds

Kearney, Neb. – A group of reserves for the third-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling went 2-1 at the eighth annual Midwest Duals Friday at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds.

The two-day event brings together area colleges, high schools and youth programs. The Loper varsity (8-5) has thee duals on Saturday, beginning with Western Colorado at 9 a.m.

Today UNK forfeited at three weights (125, 133 and 197 pounds), surrendering 18 points in two duals and 12 in another (double forfeit). In contested matches the Lopers went 15-7 with seven falls, two tech falls and a major decision. The Blue & Gold downed York, 34-21, a team of reserves from Northeastern Oklahoma A & M, 27-21, while falling to NEO's varsity, 34-10. The NEO Norsemen are ranked sixth in the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association).

Against the Panthers to start the day UNK got first period falls by Kansas sophomore Terrell Garraway (149 lbs.), Kearney redshirt freshmen Lee Herrington (285 lbs.) and Teontae Wilson (149), and Gretna redshirt freshman Tyler Cunningham (157 lbs.). For good measure Alliance redshirt senior Walker Johnson (165 lbs.) and Kearney freshman Jud Kuchera (174 lbs.) posted tech falls.

Garraway had the highlight win against the NEO backups, pinning eighth-ranked Dayton Fields at 1:59. Next Kuchera was up 15-9 in the third before winning by forfeit with Cunningham and Wilson again recording first period falls. Finally in the loss to the Norsemen varsity Garraway posted a 13-2 major decision, Cunningham bested ninth-ranked Jonny Trowbridge by a 9-5 score and Johnson used a late takedown to get by Nolan Saale, 5-4.
