UNK Goes 1-1 on Day Two

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney softball team had 13 hits and drew nine walks to down Southwest Minnesota State, 10-5, Saturday morning in Topeka, Kan.

The game was part of the three-day Washburn Invite. The first four Sioux Falls Cougars reached safely in the bottom of the seventh as part of a 6-5 win over the Lopers (9-9) in the second game of the day. UNK will play two more contests on Sunday.

Kearney got by the SMSU Mustangs (1-2) despite leaving 13 runners on base. Four different players had a multi-hit effort with three Lopers have two RBI's. UNK erased a 1-0 hole with a four-run second and then busted things open with a four-run seventh.

Leadoff hitter and sophomore shortstop Abbie Vodicka (Lincoln Pius X) remained hot at the plate by going 3 for 5 with a run scored with sophomore second baseman Kaylee Schutte (Elkhorn H.S.) finishing 2 for 4 with a run and two RBI's. Finally, junior designated player Nicole Spykstra (Chandler, Ariz.) had a double and triple as part of a 2 for 2 day with junior Sarah Handrahan working 4.1 innings with four K's to move to 2-0 on the year.

UNK was poised to rally past USF (7-4) in the second game as Spykstra (2 for 3, three RBI's) smacked a one-out, two-run double to center in the top of the seventh to tie things at five. However sophomore reliever Kaitlyn Van Der Zwaag (3-1) got two pop ups to get out of the jam and inning. Her teammates then used a walk, double, walk and Loper error to win the game.

Stranding seven on the base paths the Loper offense finished with 10 hits. Besides Spykstra, Vodicka (2 for 4, two runs) and Lincoln sophomore right fielder Carlee Liesch (2 for 4, one run) had multi-hit efforts. Australian lefty Shae Muggridge was the tough luck loser, allowing no earned runs in three innings of relief work.

The Lopers face Rockhurst and Missouri-St. Louis from the Great Lakes Valley Conference on Sunday.
