UNK Drops Likely Final Games of 2020

Kearney, Neb. – The Northeastern State RiverHawks limited Nebraska-Kearney to 12 hits to sweep a double header, 10-2 (5 innings) and 1-0, Thursday afternoon in Tahlequah, Okla.

The game was moved up a full day to due to impending thunderstorms in the area. UNK finishes 2020 with a 13-13 (3-3 MIAA) record and this will likely be the last Loper athletic competition until the 2020-21 season

NSU (16-8, 4-2) managed 10 runs in the opener thanks to nine hits, six walks and five errors. The 'Hawks scored four in the second, twice and the third and three more in the fourth. Leadoff hitter and shortstop Megan Green led the way by going 2 for 4 with three RBI's and four runs scored. In the circle junior lefty Gail Young (10-2) tossed a five inning six-hitter, fanning four and giving up a solo homer to junior first baseman Hailey Schaneman (Grand Junction, Colo.) in the second.

Besides Schaneman's second dinger of the spring Missouri senior center fielder Alexis Ray went 2 for 3 from the two hole to pace the UNK offense.

The nightcap featured just 11 combined hits as Colorado junior Melissa Gellermann (2-3) battled Brittney Beaudet (3-1) in an old school pitcher's duel. Unfortunately NSU tallied the lone run of the game in bottom of the sixth thanks to a one-out homer off the bat of first baseman Jess Schuler. Young then worked the seventh to record her lone save of 2020.

Lincoln sophomore right fielder Carlee Liesch went 2 for 3 from the third spot in the order with Gellermann going the distance. Over 109 pitches she fanned one, issued four walks and allowed a double and two singles besides the long ball.

If this was to be the final game of the year, Arizona redshirt junior Nicole Spykstra (.443) and Liesch (.430) were UNK's top hitters with Spyktra also first in RBI's (26) and doubles (eight) and Liesch leading in hits (34), steals (18) and runs (22). Next senior Kaitlyn Johnson had a team-best four HR's with Gellermann and sophomore Kelsey Goodban both having 30 K's. Finally Goodban, Colorado senior Erin Hallman and Kansas redshirt sophomore Megan Blake were at three wins apiece.
