UNK Wins in St. Joe; #3 Bearcats Up Saturday Night

Kearney, Neb. – Outside hitters Cecilia Beahm and Emersen Cyza combined for 23 kills to help 15th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney sweep Missouri Western (-20, -19, -19) Friday night in St. Joseph.

The Lopers (19-5, 10-5) win a sixth straight match and sweep the season series from the Griffons (13-11, 5-10). UNK heads to 3rd-ranked Northwest Missouri State tomorrow night; the Bearcats (19-3, 12-2) slipped past Fort Hays State in five sets in their Friday match. On Tuesday they dropped a five-setter at No. 2 Central Missouri.

There were 15 ties and four lead changes in St. Joe with UNK out hitting Mo West by a .291-.178 margin. The Lopers also served up five aces and took advantage of 12 unforced Griffon attack errors.

UNK grabbed early leads of 4-1, 9-3 and 13-9 but Mo West came back to tie things at 17. However, the Lopers closed on an 8-3 run to grab a 1-0 lead. This stretch featured three kills from Beahm (Hastings) and a couple of unforced Griffon mistakes. The second set was close early but a 9-5 run Loper run broke a 9-9 tie. Three kills and an ace from senior middle Anna Squiers (Kearney Catholic) capped the spurt and forced the Griffs to call timeout. MWSU didn't threaten the rest of the set but got out to leads of 7-3 and 11-9 in the third.

Back-to-back unforced attack errors by Mo West gave the Lopers its first lead of the set at 20-19. A kill from redshirt freshman Lauren Taubenheim (Lincoln Pius) forced the home team to take a timeout but two more unforced errors followed. UNK finished off the sweep thanks to an ace from senior DS Breanna Jones (Littleton, Colo.) and another Griffs mistake.

Beahm had half her kills in the first set and took a team-high 31 swings (.290 pct.) with Cyza hitting a solid .310 and having 29 attack attempts. Next, junior middle Bailee Sterling (Kearney H.S.) had six kills in 11 swings with zero errors while Squiers was at nine kills, four digs and a .500 efficiency. Finally, Taubenheim ended up with six kills, three digs, two aces and a solo block.

Jessica Hendrix paced MWSU with 12 kills and a block.

Back on Oct. 1 at the Health & Sports Center, NW Missouri handed the Lopers a 3-1 loss (16-25, -22, -17, -22).
