Tigers Win One Under the Lights, 3-1

Kearney, Neb. – The Fort Hays State Tigers scored four minutes in and added another goal before the break to down Nebraska-Kearney, 3-1, Friday night at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium.

FHSU wins for the third time in four outings to reach the .500 mark (7-7-3, 4-6-0). They also move into an eighth-place tie with Missouri Southern in the MIAA standings; the top eight teams make the league's postseason tournament.

Senior Jordan Thompson took a nice cross from junior Amanda Rapaduski at 3:13 to give her team a 1-0 lead. Rapaduski's pass came from the right wing with Thompson getting past a Loper defense withing the box and tallying her fourth goal of the fall.

UNK countered 12 minutes later when redshirt sophomore Payton Rhen (Omaha Skutt) was Johnny on the Spot and picked off a kick taken by Tiger keeper Deonna Wellbrock. She instantly returned the ball for her first collegiate goal. It came 20 yards out from the left wing.

"The early goal obviously wasn't great for us but I really liked the response from our team. We didn't put our head down and kept fighting," said UNK head coach Chloe Roberts. "Peyton pressed really high and picked the ball off. Their keeper made a mistake and Peyton was in the right spot. Honestly, what a hit that was and a great way to level it up."

Hays got off eight shots in the opening period with senior Cailey Perkins tallying the game winner in the 36th minute. Right after a throw in she took a pass from sophomore Hannah Mores and found the back of the Loper net for her third goal. Midway through the second half, she assisted on a goal scored by sophomore Emily Hutchings.

"We had the momentum for a little bit there (in the first half) but then we conceded a goal right before halftime. That's a bit of a killer but it was a great finish by a good player," said Roberts. "We made some individual errors that cost us tonight. People not following their marks and people just stabbing at the ball instead of keeping their feet."

Redshirt freshman keeper Emery Mounce (Spring Hill, Kan.) went the distance and tallied nine saves with South Dakota senior Kassidy Kirsch and Kansas sophomore Cammie Davis having shots on goal.

"We gave everything we had and the fight was there more than it was last weekend. We need to take the positives out of this and get ready for the next one," said Roberts. "This is a really tough conference and the best since I've been here. We have to be proud that we're competing with these teams."

Nationally-ranked Emporia State comes to town Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for "Senior Day." The Hornets (14-2-1, 8-2-0) were upset tonight by rival Washburn, 1-0.
