Upset Bid Foiled by OT Goal

Kearney, Neb. – Northwest Missouri State used an own goal to down Nebraska-Kearney in overtime, 2-1, Friday afternoon at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.

On the verge of being regionally-ranked, the Bearcats improve to 6-4-1 (2-1-1) and to 2-1-0 in true road games while a banged up bunch of Lopers fall to 2-9-0 (1-3-0).

After beating Newman University last Friday night in the first minute of the second overtime period, the Lopers fell today in the first minute of the extra time. Sophomore Kaylie Rock, who tallied her fifth goal of the year in the 23rd minute, got free in the right corner of the Loper box. Battling two defenders, she managed to get a shot off that unfortunately was trying to be cleared by a UNK defender. Instead, it went into the net for an "own goal."

"We adjusted some things in the second half. We're kind of a patchy team right now in the aspect we're playing well for 15 minutes, then don't play well for 10, then play well again for 15," said UNK head coach Chloe Roberts. "We need some consistency within the 90 minutes to help us win games, especially close ones like this."

UNK tied things up in the 75th minute when senior Kassidy Kirsch (Rapid City, SD) scored off a corner taken by redshirt sophomore Caralee Legg (Topeka, Kan.). The high-arching kick first found freshman Angelina Iocca (Old Bridge, NJ) at the top of the box who then headed the ball to Kirsch. Directly in front of the right corner of the 'Cats goal, she punched it in for her third goal as a Loper. This marked UNK's lone corner on the day; they beat Newman last Friday after Iocca headed in a corner.

"Getting another goal off a set play was great. Angelina was there again to head it down and Kassidy was in the right spot to tap it in. It was a good moment for Kass since she was coming back from that bad ankle injury (sustained on Sept. 17 vs. Washburn)," said Roberts. "Overtime is over time … it's tough. Their front three are very dynamic. We handled them pretty well but when we didn't it led to goals."

The Lopers were the aggressor in the early going, getting three shots off in the first eight minutes. However, Northwest keeper Grace Goetsch recorded a couple of saves to keep things tied.

Having a 17-7 advantage in shots, Northwest broke the scoreless tie at 23:42 right after a Loper free kick. The counter resulted in Rock taking a pass from Annelize Aleixo on the left wing and then racing toward the center of the field. She beat her defender and scored from about 18 yards by finding the lower right corner of the goal. Rock finished with a team-best six shots while Tegan Blackburn, the team's leading scorer on the year, had three.

"We started the game off really well. I think we moved the ball well for the first 15 minutes or so. But then we hit a bit of a slump where they were attack us quite a bit," said Roberts. "Our spacing on the field wasn't as good as it should be. That's why they were just coming at us and couldn't get out of our defensive third. (Rock) hit a great shot … our keeper couldn't have done much with that."

UNK got eight saves from freshman reserve keeper Rainna Daharsh (Gretna) with redshirt sophomores Ariella Mesa (Olathe, Kan.) and Payton Rhen (Omaha Skutt) having two shots apiece. Besides Kirsch, senior Bridget Barker (St. Louis) and redshirt sophomore Aleaya Snyder (Omaha Mercy) also got off shots.

The Lopers host regionally-ranked Missouri Western State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
