Hot as an August Afternoon ... Lopers Hit .400 to Win 11th in a Row

Kearney, Neb. – The 12th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team hit .411 and got 12 kills apiece from sophomore outside Emersen Cyza and senior middle Anna Squiers to sweep Pittsburg State (-18-, -15, -15) Saturday afternoon in Kansas.

This was the regular season finale for both. Winners of 11 straight matches, UNK (24-5, 15-5) will be the fourth seed in the eight-team MIAA Tournament with the Gorillas (15-13, 9-11) being the sixth seed. Both will play Tuesday night in the first round with the Lopers hosting fifth-seed Central Oklahoma (19-9, 12-9). First serve will be at 6 p.m. The official bracket will be released Saturday night.

Hitting over .400 for a second straight day and for the fourth time this year, UNK trailed just six times all afternoon. They saw Cyza (Alliance) have her kill total in just 25 swings (.440 pct.) with Squiers (Kearney Catholic) being even more efficient. She had 12 kills in 17 attempts (.647) as the Lopers recorded 13 kills in each set.

Kearney actually trailed 13-9 in the first set and lost a video challenge. However, they closed on a 16-5 run that featured back-to-back kills from Lincoln redshirt freshman right side Lauren Taubenheim and service aces from Minden redshirt DS Jensen Rowse and Lincoln senior libero Lindsay Nottlemann.

UNK never trailed in set two as Squiers and Cyza combined for 11 kills with an 11-6 Loper run highlighting the third set. That made it 14-9 and the Gorillas never climbed back into things.

Taubenheim continues a recent hot stretch by having eight kills in 17 swings with no errors (.471 pct.) while being perfect in 11 serve receive chances. Next, Nottlemann had a team-best 15 digs, three of UNK's 10 aces and three assists. This marks the fifth time this fall the Lopers have had a double digit ace total. Finally, Hastings redshirt sophomore Cecilia Beahm had two solo blocks.

Pitt was paced by Janae Thurston who tallied 12 kills and a block.
