95th Win over Rival Tigers Doesn't Take Long; #2 Jennies Up Saturday Afternoon

Kearney, Neb. – The 15th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team needed just over an hour to sweep rival Fort Hays State (-12, -15, -8) Tuesday night at the Health & Sports Center.

The Lopers (21-5, 12-5) win an eighth straight match while the Tigers fall to 12-14 (6-11). UNK is now 95-9 all-time against their neighbors to the South.

"We never let them really get any momentum. They were able to side out off and on for a period of time," said UNK head coach Rick Squiers. "What we did really well which doesn't show up on the stat sheet was covering our hitters. Balls came back at us, especially in the first two sets, and we had people in place and that frustrates blockers. That buys you some extra swings."

UNK continued its recent offensive surge, hitting .362, while also serving up 10 aces. This marks the sixth straight match hitting at least .280 with this being the third time in 2021 with a double digit ace total.

Hays, which lost to 5th-ranked Northwest Missouri State in five sets this past Friday night, gave up a 10-0 run in the first set and was never in it after that. The Tigers finished with only 23 kills, hit .034 and had trouble in serve receive.

"Our service game kind of just wore on them and we were able to get some aces as things moved along," said Squiers.

Hastings sophomore outside Cecilia Beahm paced another balanced attack with 12 kills and a .345 hitting efficiency with middles Anna Squiers (Kearney Catholic) and Bailee Sterling (Kearney H.S.) combining for 15 kills, four blocks and a .481 percentage. Next, Lincoln redshirt freshman right side Lauren Taubenheim had three blocks and nine kills for a second straight match with Kearney senior setter Madison Squiers having 36 assists, 10 digs and a career-high seven aces. That total is just three off the school mark (Kelli Koch, vs. Minnesota State, 1994).

The Tigers were led by lefty Claire Olson who had seven kills and two blocks.

UNK faces 2nd-ranked Central Missouri (22-2) Saturday at 3 p.m. The Jennies bested the Lopers in five sets last month in Warrensburg.

"(On the win streak) We were only putting three players out there they played a lot in 2019. So early in the year it was lot of people getting their first real experience," said Squiers. "It took some time for people to get confident and we just kept plugging away."
