UNK Dominates the Gators & Eagles; Vikings Up Next

Kearney, Neb. – The 3rd-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team used six falls, six tech falls and a major decision to easily get past San Francisco State, 32-14, and Chadron State, 47-3, Saturday afternoon in Chadron.

The Lopers improve to 2-1 and will finish up the fall semester with a dual at No. 15 Augustana next Friday (Dec. 17).

Wrestling the Gators, an affiliate member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conf. (RMAC), UNK used four tech falls to erase an early 14-6 deficit. Second-ranked Matt Malcom (Glenwood, Ia.) need just four minutes to rack up 17 points at 165 pounds with sophomore newcomer Billy Higgins (Omaha Skutt) tallying 19 points in just under seven minutes to give UNK the lead for good at 16-14. Fifth-ranked Austin Eldredge (184 lbs.) and South Carolina senior Hayden Prince (197 lbs.) both shut out their opponents, by a combined 35-0 score, to salt things away.

Against the overmatched Eagles, junior heavyweight Lee Herrington (Kearney H.S.) had a fall at 2:36. He had one in 1:53 against SFSU. Also for UNK, 10th-ranked Josh Portillo (Clarion, Ia.) started things with a pin at 5:50 with Kansas junior Ryan Johnson (149 lbs.) sticking his Eagle foe at exactly 4:00. Finally, Higgins had a quick 22 second fall.
