UNK Shoots Down the Jets, 81-48

Kearney, Neb. – Redshirt sophomore forward Shiloh McCool posted her fifth straight double double and No. 12/7 Nebraska-Kearney got out to an early lead to fly past Newman, 81-48, Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.

UNK (9-1, 4-) wins an eighth straight game and also improves to 5-0 at home. Meanwhile, the Jets from Wichita drop to 2-9 (0-5). These teams will meet again Feb. 5 in Kansas.

McCool (Pleasant Hill, Ia.), who has won the last two MIAA Player of the Week honors, finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds as UNK roared out to a 28-6 lead. The Jets scored the first two points of the game but UNK led 23-6 after the first quarter and started the second on a 5-0 run.

"We got off to a really good start on both ends of the floor. Defensively we were really, really solid that first quarter. We took away about everything they wanted and made it hard on them," said UNK head coach Carrie Eighmey. "Offensively the biggest thing tonight was patience. Making sure we were taking shots that we wanted to take and not just ones we could get."

Newman got a 24-point first half deficit down to 16 by the end of the third quarter but the Lopers shot 60% (9 of 15) in the fourth to stop any hopes of a miracle comeback. Overall, UNK shot an even 50% (32 of 64) from the field while holding NU to a 40% (17 of 43) effort. The Lopers also made seven more triples, had 14 fewer turnovers and had four starters in double figures.

"They went on a couple of runs … late in the second (quarter) and had another decent run in the third. We put together a few stops, scored a couple of times and then we had a pretty comfortable margin again," said Eighmey.

Redshirt junior forward Maegan Holt (Council Bluffs, Ia.) finished with a team-best 15 points thanks to 6 of 11 (2 of 4 threes) shooting. This marks her second double digit game of the year and pushes her career point total to 799, 39th on UNK all-time list. Next, Kansas junior forward Elisa Backes was at 13 points with Colorado point guard Haley Simental knocking down four treys to have 12 points. She also had five of UNK's 23 assists. Finally, South Dakota true freshman Alayna Benike had 10 points in eight minutes of the bench.

"Every time we subbed tonight there was no let up. That's the thing about our team … we have really good depth," said Eighmey. "We were able to play the whole bench tonight and they did very well."

Newman had 15 different players take to the court with 6-3 freshman post Laura Bello at 12 points and six fouls drawn.

Central Oklahoma visits Sunday at 1 p.m. The Bronchos (7-4, 3-2) led nationally-ranked Fort Hays State at the half tonight but fell in the end, 78-71.
