No. 4 Roadrunners Too Fast for the Lopers

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Avaline Lai had 20 kills and hit .529 to help fourth-ranked Metro State beat Nebraska-Kearney in four sets (-17, -19, 22-25, -18) Saturday afternoon in Denver.

The Roadrunners improve to 6-0 while the Lopers fall to 1-1. Metro, the 2020 RMAC preseason favorites, returned virtually everyone from a 2019 squad that won 23 matches and fell to Final Four qualifier Regis in five sets in the NCAA Tournament.

Lai, a 2019 honorable mention All-American, reached her kill total in just 34 swings. She was part of a 'Runners offense that hit .385 in the first set (18-3-39) and finished up at .250 on the day. Senior outside Kayla White added 13 kills and 15 digs with three others between six and seven kills.

Metro didn't trail over the first two sets and also amassed 79 digs, nine team blocks and served up eight aces. UNK recorded 13 kills in the third set and had things tied up 12 in the fourth before the 'Runners went on an 8-0 run. That spurt featured four kills by White and two from Lai.

The Lopers finished with 75 digs, seven blocks and hit .127 (40-23-166). Kearney senior middle Anna Squiers paced the offense with 16 kills while adding four blocks at the net. Next, Omaha senior right side Mary Katherine Wolfe had 10 kills, seven digs and three blocks with Kearney senior setter Madison Squiers at 30 assists, 13 digs, six kills and a block.

UNK begins MIAA play next Sunday in Hays, Kan., with matches against Emporia State and Newman.
