Lopers Kick the Mules, 74-51

Story Links

Kearney, Neb. – Eleven different players scored as Nebraska-Kearney got out to a 12-5 lead and never looked back in rolling past Central Missouri, 74-51, Thursday night at the Health & Sports Center.

The Lopers (8-11) keep its MIAA Tournament hopes alive while the Mules (6-13) drop a fifth straight game. UNK took the earlier meeting between the two, 72-69.

To record its largest margin of victory of the season, UNK shot 53 percent from the field, got 33 bench points and hit six first half threes. The Lopers led by as many as 25 points with UCM shooting just 33 percent from the field.

"This is the first time we've had a margin this comfortable. Last year we had a couple more like that," UNK head coach Kevin Lofton said. "I really thought our guys went out and defended at a high level. Offensively we shared the ball well … we had 21 assists (tied a season-high) and that's the second time we've done that this year. Overall, it was a great team effort."

Utah junior forward Darrian Nebeker had his fourth straight big outing, going for a team-best 15 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. He was a whirling dervish in the early going, attacking and spinning to the rim to the tune of a personal 6-0 run. That made 18-10 and the Mules didn't get closer than nine points the rest of the way. Nebeker is now averaging 17.0 points and 7.8 rebounds over the last four games.

"Darrian came out and established himself for the fourth straight game. He's playing at a high level and when he gets off to a great start attacking the basket that really helps us out," Lofton said.

Next, Alliance senior forward Austin Luger worked around foul trouble to have 13 points and four boards over 21 minutes with New Zealand junior reserve Matt Brien hitting three of UNK's nine treys to score 13. That marks his fourth double digit effort of the year with five other bench players scoring at least two points.

"We made some good passes and the assists showed up. We shared the ball, had good cuts to the rim and that led to some easy opportunities," Lofton said.

Finally, Wahoo sophomore forward Winston Cook had eight points and four boards and California sophomore Myles Arnold tallied five points, five boards, and four dimes.

UCM saw three reach double digits including starters Cameron Hunter (14) and Jalen Blaize (13).

The Lopers host the Lincoln Blue Tigers on Saturday afternoon. LU (10-9) fell tonight at Fort Hays State, 84-67.
