Fifth Loper 800 All-American

Kearney, Neb. – Fremont redshirt freshman Wes Ferguson ran a 1:51.06 to finish in seventh place in the 800-meter run finals at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships in Alabama.

This was the third and final day of the meet which was held in Birmingham. McCook senior Tiara Schmidt (6th/weight throw) and Kearney sophomore Brayden Sorensen (2nd/high jump) earned All-American honors earlier this weekend with Hastings sophomore Seth Simonson joining Ferguson in the 800 prelims Friday afternoon.

Ferguson ran a 1:54.38 to reach the finals and got close to his school record (1:50.60) today. He joins Jamie Bollwitt (1996), Joe Cooper (1999 & 2001), Paul Pape (2012 & 2014) and Matt Shipp (2014) as Loper men to All-American in the 800 at either the indoor or outdoor meet.

Grand Valley State senior Dennis Mbuta won the national title (1:48.62) with Queens senior Seb Anthony (1:48.74) and West Texas A&M junior Butare Rugenerwa (1:48.75) right behind.

UNK scored 10.0 points in the team race and is 22nd in the standings as of Saturday afternoon.
