Washburn Rallies Past UNK

Kearney, Neb. – Junior Raegen Hamm tossed a four-hit complete game shout out and freshman pitcher Jaycee Ginter hit a walk-off single to help Washburn take a double header from Nebraska-Kearney, 7-6 (8 innings) and 7-0, Saturday afternoon in Topeka, Kan.

The Ichabods improve to 19-4 (5-1) and push its home record to 8-1 while the Lopers fall to 9-13 (1-7).

In game one UNK was poised for a 6-4 win but the 'Bods scored two in the bottom of the seventh, worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the eighth and then scored the game winner. Freshman third baseman Marrit Mead, from the leadoff spot, finished 3 for 5 with a run and an RBI with cleanup hitter and junior designated player Ashton Fried going 2 for 2 with three runs and three RBI's.

The Lopers scored four in its half of the fourth to erase a 2-0 deficit. A three-run shot to right from Blair sophomore catcher Katie Gosker was the key hit. After WU scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, UNK scored two in the sixth to regain the lead. Freshman right fielder Abbie Jo Gaube (2 for 3) delivered a two out, two-run double to put UNK three outs from victory.

Washburn, however, used its rally caps to tie things up in the seventh. A double and single made it a one-run lead and then a walk and bunt single followed. A sac fly tied tings up but Kansas redshirt junior Megan Blake got out of the jam thanks to a line out and ground out.

UNK was poised to take the lead back as they loaded the bases in the top of the eighth but Ginter got back-to-back fielder's choices to get out of the inning unscathed. The Lopers had used a walk, error and single to start the potential game-winning rally.

The 'Bods momentum continued as they started the bottom of the eighth with a Mead single, steal, ground out and Ginter's single. She also went the distance in the circle, allowing four earned on eight hits and four walks. Blake was the tough luck loser in working the final three innings.

Besides Gaube, Colorado junior first baseman Hailey Schaneman and Lincoln junior center fielder Carlee Liesch had two hits apiece.

In the second game Hamm improved to 10-3 by fanning five and walking one in facing 26 batters. Her teammates scored runs in each of the final six innings and tallied nine hits overall. Mead (3 for 3, three runs & four RBI's) was the star by going yard twice.

Liesch paced the Lopers with a 2 for 3 effort from the two-hole with California junior Hannah Ice allowing six earned in 5.1 innings.

UNK heads to Denver on Wednesday to face the Metro State Roadrunners (8-4). That double header was supposed to be in Kearney last Wednesday but was potponed due to weather. The makeup date was Tuesday (March 30) but potential snow in Denver pushed things back another day.
