UNK Upsets Mo West in Kansas

Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney softball team racked up 15 hits, including two home runs, to hold off Missouri Western State, 7-5, in game one of a double header Saturday afternoon in Hays, Kan.

The Griffons saw designated player Chloe Armstrong hit a Grand Slam and finish with seven RBI's to take the nightcap, 13-1, in five innings. These games were originally set for Kearney but moved 2.5 hours South to a city softball complex in Hays.

UNK (11-21, 2-14) never trailed in game one as they scored three in the second and three more in the third. Ten different Lopers recorded a hit including four with two apiece. In the circle, Colorado senior Melissa Gellermann threw the first 3.1 innings with Lincoln junior Kelsey Goodban working the final three. Gellermann blanked the Griffons (23-11, 12-4) over the first two innings with Goodban shutting them out over the final 3.1.

Lincoln junior shortstop Abbie Vodicka had a two-run double to center in the second, Omaha freshman right fielder Abbie Jo Gaube (2 for 3) led off the third with a homer with Blair sophomore catcher Katie Gosker starting the fifth with a dinger to center.

Armstrong (2 for 4, two runs & seven RBI's) hit her Grand Slam with two down in the second and that made it 7-0. She then hit a two-out, three-run homer to right center in the fifth. Senior Kaili Hinds improved to 11-3 by throwing a three-hit complete game. She fanned four, walked just two and didn't allow a run until the fifth.

Australian southpaw Shae Muggridge allowed no earned runs over the final two innings with Gaube having one of UNK's three singles.

UNK hosts NW Missouri State tomorrow at 2 and 4 p.m. Those games have been moved to Dryden Park.
