Kearney, Neb. – The Nebraska-Kearney women's tennis team kept its postseason hopes alive thanks to a 5-2 win at Emporia State on Saturday afternoon.

The Lopers (5-12, 2-5) need to win at Newman (9-7, 2-5) tomorrow afternoon to reach the MIAA Tournament in Edmond, Okla., on April 30-May 1.

To beat the Hornets (7-8, 0-7) for a 10th time in 12 tries, the Lopers took the doubles point and then won three singles matches in three sets.

The number one doubles team of freshman Melisa Becerra (Columbia) and senior Claire Neil (Papillion) won 7-5 after the twos and threes won by identical 6-3 scores. Freshman Jazmin Zamorano (Mexico) and junior Pranathi Gannavaram (Lee's Summit, Mo.) are now 7-6 on the spring playing at number three.

Neil was the first Loper to have to work extra hard for a win, besting sophomore Kelsie Burr (0-6, 6-3, 6-1) at number five. After ESU won in three sets at number two to make the score 3-1, Beccera got past French graduate student Cyrielle Peyroche in three sets (1-6, 6-2, 6-1) to secure the win. Finally, freshman Myrzaiym "Mia" Sherikulova (Kyrgyzstan) capped things off with another three-set rally (6-7, 6-2, 6-4) from the third spot in the order.

UNK has met the NU Jets just once in women's tennis, winning 6-1 in a March 2011 match played on a neutral court in Topeka.
